A GEO-focused overhaul, entity clarity, direct-answer content and third-party citation building, turned an AI-search blind spot into a steady source of qualified pipeline.
The brand held solid page-one positions in classic Google search, but when prospects asked ChatGPT or Perplexity to name the best tools in its category, it never came up. A closer look found three compounding problems: robots.txt was silently blocking GPTBot, so the site was structurally invisible to one major engine regardless of content quality; product pages buried the direct answer under marketing copy instead of leading with it; and the brand had almost no independent third-party corroboration on review sites or forums for an AI engine to cite alongside the brand's own claims.
Corrected robots.txt to allow GPTBot and other AI crawlers, then implemented Organization, Product and FAQPage schema so key facts were reliably machine-extractable, not just visually present on the page.
Rewrote priority pages so the direct answer sat in the first two sentences, with specific, dated claims and comparison tables in place of vague marketing language, the format Perplexity and ChatGPT's browsing mode most readily lift into an answer.
Standardized product names, pricing figures and terminology across the site, docs and every third-party listing, since inconsistent phrasing reads as several weaker sources to a model instead of one authoritative one.
Secured mentions on G2, Capterra and category comparison roundups, since Perplexity in particular stitches together several external sources per answer rather than relying on a brand's own site alone.
Within five months, the brand went from appearing in essentially zero tracked AI-engine answers to being cited by name in ChatGPT browsing-mode and Perplexity responses for its core category terms, with monthly citation tracking showing consistent appearances rather than one-off mentions. Signups attributed to AI-referral traffic grew 1.9x over the same window, arriving already familiar with the product from the context they'd read in the cited answer.
“We were already ranking on Google. We had no idea we were completely absent from ChatGPT and Perplexity until we started actually tracking it, that gap alone was probably costing us more pipeline than any keyword we were still chasing.”
